Navigating Pinterest for Beginners
Pinterest is an app that I could quite literally talk about for hours. It is both my most used app and favorite app on my phone, and I would attribute both of those facts to the simplicity of the platform. The contents of the app are to view photos based on your interests and then pin them to a board that you create (pinning your interests)! I’ve used Pinterest since I was in middle school and while my interests have evolved, my love for the app has remained stagnant.
I would say Pinterest is one of the biggest forms of inspiration in my life and has a significant influence over how I dress, what my room looks like, what foods I try, what this blog looks like, etc. However, the idea of “influencing” is different in context on Pinterest, because I am essentially influencing myself through the photos I pin to my account.
I know Pinterest does not reign in popularity as much as other social media platforms, however, I think it should, which is why I have created a guide for anyone who wants to start using Pinterest regularly.
Lily’s Guide to Navigating Pinterest for Beginners
What I love most about Pinterest is that it is up to the creative mind of each individual to curate their space on the platform, but I have some tips to help anyone start fresh on their account.
1. Dressing, Eating, Doing
The most efficient way to start on Pinterest is to create your first three boards based on things you do in your everyday life, dressing, eating, and doing. For dressing, find outfits or outfit pieces that you could envision yourself wearing and save them to a board. I like to keep my board for this topic updated seasonally, so I always have inspiration for the current and upcoming seasons. For the board focused on eating/food, consider pinning foods and recipes you want to try, or simply even your favorite foods. I have been wanting to make more smoothies recently, so I have been pinning a lot of smoothie recipes in the past week. “Doing” can mean something different to every person, whether it be a sport they do, a place they’re going to, or their favorite activities. My board with this topic has different exercise methods, and traveling inspiration, among other pins.
2. Personalization
The next step for creating a Pinterest account tailored to you is to create boards that are personalized to your interests. This can range from absolutely any topic, but to give you ideas, some of my personal boards include…
“Candids” - favorite photos of celebrities, campaigns, etc
“Hearted” - a casual collection of my favorite photos, places, quotes, etc
“Graduation” - outfits I want to recreate for various upcoming graduation events
“Hair” - inspiration for hairstyles, haircuts, etc
“Health + Wellness” - motivational board for personal health
3. Envisioning the Future
One of the most common uses of Pinterest is to plan for upcoming events and the future in general. Whatever that means to you, it is never too early to at least have inspiration for some part of your future. For me, I have had a board created for dorm room ideas for a while, to have a gauge on what I want my room to look like when the time comes.
I also have future vacations curated into boards to find inspiration on outfits, activities, and photos to take. Other ideas include upcoming holidays or seasons, events, birthdays, parties, etc.
This depends on the person, but picturing the future in some way on Pinterest is one of the most popular ways to use the platform.
Pinterest serves as the ultimate source of inspiration for so many people, but most importantly, each user is inspiring themselves through the photos they find and pin. I cannot recommend the platform enough, it is one of my favorite pastimes and a very positive outlet in my life.
