My Take on Self-care
Self-care is a nuanced subject that can mean a lot of different things. Taking care of yourself includes a wide range of activities such as getting adequate sleep, eating in a balanced manner, and moving your body in some way, among others. In short, taking care of yourself is prioritizing two things: feeling good and looking good, both of which depend on the person. Feeling good can mean eating, wearing, or doing certain things, and looking good is simply being content with your appearance. Our lives are dependent on the decisions we make every day, which ultimately impact both of these things.
The forms of self-care I want to mainly cover is centered around taking care of your skin, hair, and mind. Certain products and items can obviously help people take care of themselves and make them look & feel good. I would consider skincare and haircare an essential form of self-care, while make-up is an optional form that can enhance natural features.
I have always had an interest in skincare specifically because I enjoy finding products I love and work well on my skin. Everyone’s preferences are different as to what they put on their skin, but certain items are more necessary than others. The two products I find to be the most important are a moisturizer and SPF. Keeping your skin moisturized is so incredibly important to avoid dryness, breaking out, and other issues. Regardless of the product, I always look for ones with hyaluronic acid, a moisturizing factor that works well for my skin. SPF is equally important because it protects the skin from sun rays, which can over time be very damaging, especially to the skin on the face.
Makeup and haircare are key components of self-care for me and similar to skincare, I love picking out and trying new products. If I were choosing out of the three of these components, I would always choose to spend more money on skincare, because I believe that it is by far the most important. I keep my makeup and haircare collections more minimal and have been able to find certain products I love.
Beyond these sub-topics of self-care, another idea I find crucial in taking care of yourself is to take time for yourself. Spend time doing things you love, for me that’s reading, watching movies, going out with friends, etc. Make time for the things you want to do in the day. Plus, the basics I touched on earlier are prime components such as eating, sleeping, and moving your body in methods that work best for you.
Something I always think about is that this is the only body you will ever have, so treat it well!
